'Losing the ego'

written 5/25/16

How trying it is

to lose the ego.

It burns off in stages,

dropping its fuel tanks

one by one.

But the stages linger long,

and burn, and burn on.

Nothing was ever easy.

At each stage,

you wonder if you'll survive.

The ego protects a wounded child,

with whatever is needed.

Those skills accumulated over time

will not likely be forgotten.

But as you lift up and up,

perspective evolves, and you see

that this duality within

caused you to cut off commitments.

That life is about commitment,

which you knew, but many times

youcould not complete, so you dropped it.

Your ego made you forget

because you did not always understand.

Someone like this needs

notfor anyone to tell them

"Grow up" or "Use your head"

butrather, what is always needed,

a teacher.   A teacher
who would say,

"You must begin to shed your ego.

I will take my time, explain at length

the importanceof commitment."

This must be given, like a gift,

like a Native American* might have given

an animal skin jacket or gloves

made by their own hands.

Not because one has an ego covering,

but as a symbol of leaving

one stage for another.
